The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) is a nationally accredited U.S. law enforcement agency and acts as the enforcement arm of the courts in Montgomery County, Maryland. All of its deputy sheriffs are fully certified law enforcement officials with full authority of arrest.
The office was created in July 1777 and is headquartered in Rockville, Maryland. It was nationally accredited in 1995, the first county sheriff's office in Maryland to be so. The office is headed by a sheriff; the current sheriff is Darren M. Popkin.

History
1770s
Created in July 1777, the MCSO is the oldest law enforcement agency in Montgomery County.
1920s
In July 1924, William L. Aud, a former Montgomery County sheriff, became the Montgomery County police chief.
1930s
In February 1939, Charles M. Orme, who was a Montgomery County Sheriff's Office deputy from 1925 to 1939, became the Montgomery County police chief.
1990s
The MCSO was accredited in 1995; the first county sheriff's office in Maryland to be. It advertises this fact through stickers affixed to the quarter panels of its vehicles.
2010s
In December 2010, the MCSO's longest-serving sheriff, Raymond M. Kight, retired.
Organization
The MCSO has authorized over 165 employees consisting of sworn law enforcement officers and civilian support staff.
Headquarters
The office is headquartered in Room T400 of the Montgomery County Judicial Center at 50 Maryland Avenue in Rockville, Maryland.
Sheriff
The office is headed by the sheriff, who has been elected every four years since the 1920s. The sheriff currently is Darren M. Popkin, a Democrat. Popkin succeeded Raymond M. Kight as sheriff, who retired in December 2010. Popkin's current term ends in 2018, when he will be eligible for reelection.

Uniforms
MCSO deputies wear tan shirts with black pants, with the wearer's last name embroidered above the right pocket. In the past the MCSO wore brown pants with tan striping on the sides.
